Knitting at Caroline House

June 16th, 2008

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to help my mother teach a knitting class at Caroline House. It was such a great experience, and many of the women have now caught the knitting bug. Of course, I forgot my camera, but Jennifer always has hers glued to her, so I’m borrowing them from her (thanks Jennifer!) She’s not in any of the photos because she was behind the camera, but her love of knitting was infectious, and we can credit (or blame) her for bringing a few women over to the dark side!

Caroline House, located in Connecticut, is dedicated to enabling women and their children in need of English-language skills to reach the fullness of their potential through education. Caroline House was founded and is staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. They are such a lovely group, and have created a serene, welcoming home that facilitates and encourages learning and living.

Here I am with my mom showing off some of our knitting.

Joanne, another knitter sitting here on the right, brought her beautiful sampler blanket – here we are admiring it – the students were in awe – it is just gorgeous.

Maria, one of the students, is showing off some of her knitting. She claimed she couldn’t knit, but really didn’t know how to increase or decrease. That has since been remedied, so now she can add some shaping into her sweaters. Here she is with sweaters and matching hats with cables and textured stitches. Just beautiful!

All of the students took to knitting naturally – here are a few photos of the classes.

We has such an incredible experience. I’d like to thank Jennifer, Joanne and Kathy for helping me with this project – you are all phenomenal, and have passed on your love of knitting to such amazing women! Hopefully, we’ll be able to get a knitting group going at Caroline House!

Danni – Thank YOU and your mother for introducing us to this wonderful opportunity! It was a blast. I can hardly wait to start again in the fall.
